for Catholics on
End-of-Life Issues

At some point every family must deal with issues involving end of life care for a loved one. As Catholics attempt to navigate the myriad medical, ethical, and religious questions that arise, all the while dealing with the grief of an impending death, it can become overwhelming.
In an effort to offer assistance, the New York State Catholic Conference has produced a website that tackles many of the common questions and concerns, offers  clarity and compassion, and serves as an education Resource for Catholics nationwide.

The Diocese of Rochester and the Gates Catholic Community is committed to the safety and well-being of our youth and vulnerable adults.  In ensuring this safety and well-being the diocese has created a mandatory workshop and background check for any adult having direct contact with our youth and vulnerable adults.  The two hour workshop, “Creating a Safe Environment” and subsequent confidential background check is provided at no charge to any adult wishing to assist directly with our youth and vulnerable adults. Please contact the Parish Office for further information.

The funeral mass for Fr. Mike will be live streamed.
Please click on the link below for access.

As you are aware, New York State regulations limit the number of people able to be present at all gatherings, including Masses. In order to comply with this regulation and for the safety of all, parishioners should be aware that attendance at the Funeral Mass on Friday must remain under 33% of the occupancy of the church.  Additional seating will be available in the gymnasium.  The Funeral Mass will also be livestreamed and can be accessed through the parish website:

In order to avoid overcrowding at the Funeral Mass, parishioners are encouraged to pay their respects and pray for the repose of Father Schramel’s soul during the calling hours on Thursday afternoon, when Father will lie in state, or at Vespers on Thursday evening, at 7:00 p.m.

If there any questions, please contact the office today or Thursday between the hours of 9:00am-12:00pm, so that we may answer any questions you may have.

The office will be closed Friday so that the staff may attend Father’s funeral.

My Dear Friends in Christ,

When death touches our lives it is deeply painful.  When it comes suddenly the pain is  ombined with shock and bewilderment.  When it comes from within our faith it also has hope in Christ’s eternal promise.

I know today, Holy Family parish and all its members are deeply saddened, shocked and have a sense of bewilderment with the very sudden and tragic death of our beloved and deeply                     respected Fr. Mike. I know Fr. Mike was deeply committed to each one of you and the Holy Family parish made up of Holy Ghost, St. Helen’s and St. Jude’s families.  We have a huge hole in the heart of our faith community and within all of us.

As someone who has known Fr. Mike from our priestly fraternity and as a priest of the Diocese of Rochester, I know of his deep commitment to bring together all of you from St. Helen’s, St. Jude’s and Holy Ghost parishes was a deep reflection of the faith he knew his entire life.  It is one we likewise must call upon ourselves not only when death touches our lives but actually each and every moment of each and every day.  From death comes life. It is the message of Jesus Christ and it is the heart of our faith. It has guided Fr. Mike’s entire life and especially when as a priest he baptized our children and grandchildren, heard confessions of the sinner, presided at the marriage rite of young people in love, anointed the sick and dying and above all presided and celebrated the Eucharist with all of us.

So, at this time, let us pray from our hearts always, “Eternal rest grant unto him O’ Lord and may perpetual light shine on him”.
